Choosing the Right Air Conditioner for your Project

Choosing the Right Air Conditioner for your Project

5 Feb, 2025

Embracing the scorching summer months and battling relentless humidity becomes a breeze with the inclusion of an air conditioner in your home. A quintessential addition to any new residential construction, the right air conditioner not only promises blissful relief from the heat but also ushers in year-round comfort, courtesy of its cooling and heating capabilities (in applicable models).

However, identifying the perfect air conditioner for your specific project can be a task that requires some expertise. Fear not, though, as our seasoned team at R.T. Edwards is here to lend their knowledge and support, ensuring that all your project objectives are met well within the established deadlines.

When it comes to home air conditioning units, the choices are abundant, each with its unique features and capabilities, yielding different outcomes. In this blog, we are set to unravel the diverse array of air conditioning options available, shedding light on key considerations such as functionality and efficiency. Furthermore, we will delve into the world of renowned brands and their most sought-after models, empowering you with the information needed to make an informed choice for your project.

Air Conditioner Types

Spilt System Air Conditioners

A split system air conditioner features two units – an outside unit called the compressor and an inside unit installed on the wall that provides cooling and heating, where applicable. split system air conditioners are the standard variation, however multi-split units also exist, where there are multiple indoor units connected to one single outdoor unit.

Of note is that there are 2x types of split system air conditioners, one with ‘cooling only’ operation and another with reverse cycle operation.

Reverse Cycle Air Conditioners

A reverse cycle air conditioner features reverse cycle technology, which is a system that both heats and cools from the single appliance. The air conditioner’s reverse cycle simply reverses the cooling program of the unit to deliver heating when the heat mode is required. Since it includes heating and cooling modes of operation, Reverse Cycle Air Conditioners are great for climate areas that require all-year climate comfort. Reverse cycle air conditioners are also typically easier, cheaper and safer to run compared to portable heaters which can overload electric circuits.

Portable Air Conditioners

Ideal for smaller areas, portable air conditioners are compact and made for moving between spaces. Compact in size, portable air conditioners are great for renters; offering flexible placement.

Most portable air conditioners have built-in castor wheels so that they can be moved to where cool or warm air is needed most.

Window/Wall Air Conditioners

Where a wall mounted spilt system is not possible, a window/wall air conditioner will provide cooling that’s ideal for small to medium sized rooms. Window/wall air conditioners are ingeniously designed to fit snugly into window or wall openings, ensuring optimal cooling for your space. These versatile units come in two primary modes: 'cooling only' for those hot summer days and reverse cycle operation for year-round climate control.

Air Conditioner Considerations

Outside of the Air Conditioner’s design, placement and installation, there are a wide range of considerations to know about. Below are top air conditioner considerations to look into before purchasing an air conditioner.

  • Capacity: An air conditioner’s cooling and heating capacity is measured in kilowatts (kW), with a larger figure indicating powerful performance that’s suited to large spaces.
  • Operating Modes: There are various modes of cooling and heating, as well as specific operating conditions such as eco mode, night mode and sleep mode that are designed to meet changing needs.
  • Filters & Purifiers: Built-in filters capture unwanted particles and allergens while purifiers clean and deodorise the air to deliver a fresh and hygienic indoor atmosphere.
  • Sensors: Smart sensors detect motion and adjusts cooling or heating accordingly so that energy is not wasted on a room that is empty.
  • Smart Features: Consumers can now enjoy smarter control of their cooling and heating with network connected air conditioners. WiFi enabled air conditioners can be controlled via an app on a smartphone or tablet, and sometimes can even be controlled with voice control using compatible smart home speakers, for example a Google Nest or Amazon Echo (Alexa) speaker.
  • DRED Capable: Selected air conditioner models are DRED capable. DRED, which is short for ‘Demand Response Enabling Devices’  have been designed to reduce peak power demand. Air conditioners with DRED capability can be controlled by the electricity provider, using pre-programmed levels during peak periods to help manage energy demand on the power grid.
  • Energy Efficiency: Air conditioners can use a considerable amount of power. This is where knowing the energy consumption and efficiency of an air conditioner will be valuable. A higher energy efficiency rating indicates greater efficiency during operation.

Reverse cycle air conditioners are more energy efficient and environmentally-friendly than other heating systems, especially electric heaters. An advantage of reverse cycle air conditioners is that they are able to produce more heat whilst using less energy to operate. For instance, for every 1kW of electricity consumed, the air conditioner can generate approximately 3-4kW of heating or cooling.
